The population of Calella, distinguished with the ‘Sports Tourism Destination’ certificate (2009), has a close relationship with the world of sports. In addition, thanks to major sporting events such as the 1st stage of the Tour of Catalonia or the renowned triathlon, “Calella Barcelona Ironman”, this town has become a top destination amongst cycling fans.

In Calella there are different facilities for sports: athletics tracks, an Olympic swimming pool and municipal swimming pool, the seafront and roads near the town. Sports lovers on holiday in Calella can enjoy road cycling, football, basketball, volleyball and handball.

There are also water sports such as parasailing, windsurfing, sailing or kayaking at the Water Sports Centre. There are other sports clubs such as Calella Tennis Club, Calella Swimming Club, Calella Athletics Club, Calella Beach Volley Club and Calella Table Tennis Club. In addition, there are annual handball and beach tennis championships. Not far from Calella, in the town of Sant Cebrià, there is Pitch & Putt at the Sant Cebrià Golf Centre.

Calella hosts renowned sporting events such as the Barcelona Ironman.

Typical distances: 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.20 km running (a half marathon).

Water Sports in Calella

Calella’s Club Nàutic Water Sports Centre offers the opportunity to learn windsurfing, catamaran sailing, kayaking or to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea in another way: water skiing, parasailing, piloting a speedboat or gliding on the waves in different inflatables like the flyfish, slider or banana-bus.

Road cycling in Calella

Calella is ideal for road cycling because it has a wide variety of routes and there are several shops in the town for cyclists. 

There are routes that take the cyclist through the Maresme towards Barcelona, to the plains of the Empordà region, around Girona or the Montseny mountains, as well as for a spot of pedalling along the beach.


Mountain biking in Calella

The Montnegre i el Corredor Natural Park, a few kilometres from Calella, is an excellent natural area full of paths for mountain biking through a bucolic landscape. The park offers more than 90km of BTT routes for all levels, although the more you get into Montnegre i el Corredor Natural Park, the more you will find bigger gradients. 

Cycling routes in Calella

Calella is the starting and finishing point of 8 cycle routes with different distances, different levels and difficulty ranging from 51 to 151 km. The routes connect towns, like the route from Calella to Canet de Mar and Tordera, the one that goes to Tossa de Mar or Santa Fe del Montseny, the one that goes to Santuario del Corredor or through the ports of Maresme up to the 2013 Calella Half Challenge route and Turó de l'Home.

Vías Bravas, sea swimming lanes in Calella

The Vías Bravas are a marine and open water public network for sports, leisure and educational activities.

These lanes offer safe ways of enjoying the “open waters” of our coast.

Calella Vía Brava on the Barcelona coast is 1 km long, of medium difficulty and is usually open from May to October. It is ideal for swimming in open water and snorkelling.
